On 20 March 2025, the Carpathian Foundation's Board of Directors awarded a total HUF 12 million in grants to four local partners within our Early Years Matters Program. The funded projects will provide early skills development for children living in poverty and strengthen the parenting skills of their parents in four settlements in north-eastern Hungary.
The Somnakuno Drom Roma Women's Association's project "Together for Early Childhood Development" aims to support disadvantaged, predominantly Roma families in a Roma settlement in Nagykálló. Activities such as early childhood development, parenting clubs and family days in the community centre help to promote conscious parenting and education.
The "SZETA Kindergarten" project is a niche project in the Béke settlement in Eger. Children are in great need to support their development through different activities and to open up the world around them, to meet other socialisation arenas. The specific aim is to develop the children's skills and abilities, thus giving them a solid foundation in basic literacy, maths and communication skills needed to start school.
The project "I am still rocking you, my darling" of the Hungarian Roma Association of Szomolya aims to improve the knowledge level and child-rearing skills of parents in Szomolya. Programs are organised mainly for parents and prospective parents with young children, to help support their children's development and to develop conscious parenting. It is also important that the women participants form a community. The sessions for children under 8 years are held by Vanda Tátrai, a specialist storytelling therapist, who also runs group sessions for older children.
The National Association of Roma Women of the 21st Century in its project- "Petal Playhouse 6" - Learning by Playing! in the Nyíregyháza-Jósaváros area- offers developmental sessions for children under 7, parent clubs for parents once a month and regular community programmes. The programs aim to strengthen community cohesion and support the proper development of families, parents and children.
